Biography
Professor Sabine Bahn is Professor of Neurotechnology at the Institute of Biotechnology, University of Cambridge, Professor of Translational Neuroscience within the Department of Neuroscience at Erasmus Medical Centre, Rotterdam, and an honorary consultant in psychiatry at the Peterborough and Cambridge University NHS Trust. She is also a Fellow at Lucy Cavendish College, University of Cambridge.
Bahn studied medicine at the University of Freiburg, Germany, and conducted her MD research at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, Cambridge, examining cytotoxic effects of antiepileptic drugs on hippocampal neurons and the developmental expression of high-affinity kainate receptors. Her PhD, also at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, focused on mechanisms directing gene expression to specific neuronal sub-populations using transgenic mouse assays and comparative genome sequencing.
For more than 25 years, she has pursued parallel careers in medicine and molecular neurobiology, training as a psychiatrist while developing molecular profiling approaches to understand the basis of neuropsychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders, particularly schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. She is co-founder of Psynova Neurotech Ltd, which developed the first commercially available Aid for the Diagnosis of Schizophrenia (VeriPsych™).
Research interests
- Molecular psychiatry
- Neurodevelopmental and psychotic disorders
- Translational neuroscience
- Molecular profiling (proteomics, metabolomics, lipidomics)
- Biomarker discovery
Professor Bahn’s group investigates the molecular mechanisms underlying neuropsychiatric disorders using integrated molecular profiling and neurotechnology approaches. Her team works closely with clinical and industrial partners, aiming to develop novel diagnostics and therapies.
Awards and achievements
- Co-founder, Psynova Neurotech Ltd
- Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology (FRSB)
- Recognised for translational research in neuropsychiatric disorders
Teaching and supervision
Professor Bahn’s research group will be closing down in October 2026 as she retires, and she is no longer taking on new students.
Sabine is unavailable for consultancy work.
