Facilities
The Department offers a wide range of facilities that support teaching, research and innovation.
From designing and building equipment in the Makerspace to accessing advanced scientific instruments in our laboratories, our facilities help students, researchers and collaborators tackle complex scientific and engineering challenges.
In addition, the Department hosts specialist research laboratories that support activity across our research themes. These facilities help turn new ideas into discoveries, technologies and real-world impact.

Makerspace
The Makerspace is the Department’s dedicated engineering workshop.
It supports teaching, research and innovation by providing students, researchers, staff and external partners with access to specialist equipment, technical expertise and practical support.
From custom components and experimental apparatus to early-stage prototypes, the Makerspace helps transform ideas into working solutions while developing practical engineering skills.
Shared equipment and access
The Department supports the wider research community by providing access to selected equipment and facilities where appropriate. Requests are considered on a case-by-case basis and depend on technical requirements, availability and the capacity of our teams to support external users.
Researchers seeking access to specialist equipment, or preparing funding applications that involve shared facilities, are welcome to get in touch.
