Research interests
  • Development and evaluation of novel cardiovascular devices, including polymeric heart valves and annuloplasty rings.
  • Microstructure characterisation using X-ray diffraction techniques, with experience at major synchrotron facilities (Diamond Light Source, UK; Soleil, Paris; ESRF, Grenoble).
  • Microstructured materials and the relationship between structure and material properties.
  • Polymer processing, including injection moulding, compression moulding, and extrusion.
  • Supercritical fluid technologies, including drying, extraction, oxidation, and thermohydrolysis processes.
  • Dispersion, diffusion, and transport phenomena in porous materials.
Awards and achievements
  • Director of Studies – Homerton College, University of Cambridge (Since 2016)
  • Co-founder, CamBris Cardiac Limited (April 2021)
  • Co-investigator on multiple research grants, totalling over £2M
Teaching and supervision

Joanna is a lecturer and supervisor for the Fluid Mechanics module, including Project: Fluid Mechanics. She also teaches Computing Skills and the laboratory component of Process Dynamics and Control module. She is a member of the Design Project team and serves as a Research Project Coordinator for final-year students in the department. Joanna is also an active supervisor of Research Projects.
