CEB Infrastructure Manager wins Professional Services Award

The Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology (CEB)’s Infrastructure Manager, Alexander Carvell, has won a Professional Services award for demonstrating excellence in leadership and management.

Alex was the winner of the Professional Services award for Demonstrating Excellence in Leadership and Management.

The prize, awarded as part of the University’s Professional Services Recognition Scheme, noted that through his technical expertise, organisational skills and people-focused leadership, Alex has made a substantial contribution to the department’s success. He was nominated for the award by several colleagues who praised his people management, his technical and laboratory support, and his efforts to ensure departmental safety.

Among those who nominated Alex for his award is Head of Department Clemens Kaminski, who had this to say in his nomination;

“Alex’s work ethic is exceptional; he is always on time with tasks, extremely reliable, and is an enthusiastic and efficient line manager for his own team. Research in the department simply would not function as well as it does without his efforts.”

Professor Clemens Kaminski, Head of Department

Alex joined the Department in 2020 as a Laboratory Technician before taking on his current role in June of 2022. His work touches almost every part of the Department’s day-to-day operations. He oversees everything from ensuring the department has a stable water, gas and power supply to managing the catering and reception teams. He serves as Deputy Department Safety Officer and Deputy Fire Manager. He helps ensure that the Department’s laboratories have the right infrastructure to continue pushing the bounds of chemical engineering and biotechnological research.

Somehow, he also finds time to run CEB’s Gardening Club. This work, which he describes as his pride and joy, aims to revitalise an underused space at the heart of the building, turning it into an evergreen garden for the whole Department to enjoy.

Alex serves as the key bridge between research and professional services staff, and his work is invaluable in keeping the department pointed in the right direction.

When asked how he felt about being recognised, Alex said;

“This recognition means a lot to me. The colleagues who nominated me have been extremely kind to do so, and it’s nice to know that my work makes a difference to people around the department”
